Yep, here it is--the Church of Peter Gabriel Choir singing Happy Birthday to Peter. We present it here for your listening enjoyment! happy birthday
Now, by a bizzare coincidence, the Choir also happens to share a lot of members with the St. Louis Shapenote Singers. And so we also present their traditional birthday song-- morning sun. A brief word about this file--it's about 1.5 MB, so it'll take a little longer to download than Happy Birthday. And it's a tune from the Sacred Harp. While there are some professional groups that sing this music, by and large it's sung by people who just like to sing. So, erm, it's a little rough. Even when it's at it's best (say, at a good Southern covention, where the singers have sung this music all their lives and the sound is positively spine tingling) it's not exactly pretty. The St. Louis Shapenote Singers meet twice a month to sing for the pure pleasure of it--no auditions, no performances. So consider yourself warned.
They also have a warped sense of humor. In case you lack the courage to download the file, here are the words to Morning Sun:
Youth like the spring will soon be gone By fleeting time or conquering death Your morning sun may set at noon And leave you ever in the dark Your sparkling eyes and blooming cheeks Must wither like the blasted rose The coffin, earth and winding sheet Will soon your active limbs enclose
Gives you a lift, doesn't it? Happy Birthday, Peter!
